“I felt very hurt because I was abandoning the most precious thing in my life: my son,” Rim remembers.
Rim used to sleep with a knife under her pillow out of fear. Then, after 10 years of a physically and emotionally abusive marriage, the family fled from Syria to a Christian area of Lebanon. With more opportunities for women there, Rim finally felt she could leave her husband—but to grant the divorce, he demanded that she leave their son, too.
Rim was safe, but “I had lost everything,” she says. She tried practicing the traditional Islam she grew up in, but it left her still feeling empty.

Rim was crying out to God when she received a Bible and was invited to a local church. She’d never felt anything like the welcome they gave her—or the joy she saw there.
