Why did Jesus call Himself the Bread, the Gate, and the Vine? |
Why did Jesus call Himself the Bread, the Gate, and the Vine? |
Imagine Jesus sitting across from you today. What would He want you to know about Himself? Sometimes, we need to hear His words again— straight from Scripture— to remember who He really is. The "I Am" statements of Jesus aren't just metaphors… they are personal revelations of His heart, His character, and His invitation to know and follow Him. Megan Fate Marshman unpacks stunning "a-ha" moments hidden in these statements— connecting them to Old Testament stories, Jewish festivals, and powerful truths that will deepen your relationship with Jesus— in our Summer Online Bible Study, John: Believe I Am! It's not too late to join us for this study experience! You'll get access to all 8 video teaching sessions— plus some amazing bonus freebies. Below is a glimpse of what you'll uncover in this incredible study— starting next week! Are you in!? |
"I AM" as a Divine Name ✨ (Session 1) - A-ha moment: When Jesus says "I Am," He is using the divine name of God revealed in Exodus 3:14, when God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM."
- Connection: Jesus is directly identifying Himself with Yahweh, the God of Israel. This is why the religious leaders accused Him of blasphemy in John 8:58 when he said: "Before Abraham was born, I am."
I AM the Bread of Life 🍞 (Session 2) - A-ha moment: Jesus declares this right after feeding the 5,000 and during Passover season—when Jewish people remembered the manna from heaven.
- Connection: He's saying, "I am the true and better manna." Not only does He provide daily sustenance, but eternal satisfaction (John 6:35).
- Deeper truth: Manna rotted after one day. Jesus, the Bread of Life, endures forever.
I AM the Light of the World 💡 (Session 3) - A-ha moment: Jesus says this during the Feast of Tabernacles when four giant lamps were lit in the temple to symbolize God's presence as light.
- Connection: He's saying: "I'm the Light those lamps point to."
- Deeper truth: The pillar of fire that led Israel by night in the wilderness (Exodus 13:21)? Jesus says: That was Me.
I AM the Gate & the Good Shepherd 🐑 (Session 4) - A-ha moment: In ancient sheep pens, the shepherd would lie down in the gate opening, acting as the physical gate to protect the sheep.
- Connection: Jesus lays down His life (John 10:11), both as protector and provider.
- Deeper truth: Psalm 23 comes alive here: "The Lord is my shepherd…" He's not just figuratively shepherding—He is the Shepherd David foresaw.
I AM the Resurrection and the Life 🌱 (Session 5) - A-ha moment: Jesus doesn't just perform resurrections—He is the source of resurrection.
- Connection: In Jewish belief, resurrection was an end-time event. Jesus brings that future hope into the present (John 11:25).
- Deeper truth: He calls Lazarus out by name—suggesting He has personal power over death (John 11:43).
I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life 🛤️ (Session 6) - A-ha moment: Jesus doesn't just show the path—He is the path.
- Connection: The Greek word for "way" (hodos) implies a journey or road. In the Old Testament, God's Word was a lamp to the path (Psalm 119:105)—Jesus is that living path now.
- Deeper truth: In Jewish temple architecture, the entrance gates were named: "The Way," "The Truth," and "The Life." Jesus is saying: "I am the true Temple—come through Me to God."
I AM the Vine 🍇 (Session 7) - A-ha moment: Israel was often referred to as a vine in the Old Testament (Isaiah 5:1-7).
- Connection: Jesus claims to be the true Vine.
- Deeper truth: The phrase "apart from me you can do nothing" is a radical declaration of our complete dependence on abiding connection with Christ.
"Follow Me" : Find Life in His Name 👣 (Session 8) - A-ha moment: In John 21, Jesus reverses Peter's 3 denials with 3 questions of love, then gives him the same invitation He gave at the beginning: "Follow Me."
- Connection: This ties back to John 1 and 20:31. The Gospel begins and ends with an invitation to believe and follow.
- Deeper truth: This isn't just about knowing the "I Am" statements—it's about living them. The life Jesus offers is relational, restorative, and daily.
