From the Africa Bible Commentary, available with Bible Gateway Plus: The theme of promise, punishment by exile, rescue and return to the land is a recurrent one in the Psalms (105:42-45; 106:24-27, and 107:3). In this psalm, the theme is presented in the form of four vivid scenes of God delivering his people. Commentators disagree about whether these scenes describe the experience of the nation as a whole or the experience of various groups within the nation during its exile. But all agree that this psalm describes real experiences that together contribute to a great service of thanksgiving for the Lord's goodness to his people. The psalm upholds the truth proclaimed in Psalm 50:15: 'Call on me in the day of trouble and I will deliver you and you will glorify me.' It also reminds us of Jesus' promise: 'Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest' (Matt 11:28). We can identify with the people in these situations, for all of us have experienced things like sickness, the loss of a loved one, disappointment, or some other life storm in which the word of the Lord has been of much encouragement and comfort. This commentary reminds us that thanksgiving is more than a moment—it's a response to God's ongoing rescue and mercy in every season of life. |
