Dear Friend,
As Christmas approaches, it's easy to fill our days with "more." More to do, more to buy, more to keep up with. But when Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd, He invites us into something far deeper—a relationship of knowing and being known.
The Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary (available with Bible Gateway Plus) explains it this way:
The Old Testament often described Israel's covenant relationship with God as "knowing" him, which meant having an intimate and obedient relationship with him (e.g., Ex. 6:7; Jer. 24:7; Hos. 6:6). In the new covenant, such knowledge of God would stem from God's word in his people's hearts (Jer. 31:31–34), and may allude also to the language of covenant marital intimacy (Jer. 31:32; Hos. 5:4), a familiar image (e.g., Gen. 4:1).
That kind of knowing doesn't come from rushing—it grows through time in God's Word, guided by tools that help you understand Him.
