A closer look at the compassion at the heart of Jesus' parable.

So he got up and went to his father.  "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.  — Luke 15:20 (NIV)  The Father Who Welcomes Us Home  Jesus' parable of the prodigal son is one of Scripture's most powerful pictures of returning to God.    After wandering far from home, the son finally comes to his senses. He prepares a confession and begins the long journey back, expecting only to be received as a servant.    But the story is a moment of unexpected grace, and the father runs to meet him.    The image reveals something profound about the heart of God: when we turn back toward Him, we are not met with hesitation, but with compassion.  A closer look at the father's compassion  The abridged Expositor's Bible Commentary, one of 70+ resources available with Bible Gateway Plus, reflects on this moment in Jesus' parable:   17-20 "Came to his senses" seems to carry the Semitic idea of repentance. Certainly repentance lies at the heart of the words that the son prepared to tell his father. The motivation for his return was hunger, but it was specifically to his "father" that he wanted to return. He admitted that his sins were ultimately against God ("heaven").   The description of his return and welcome is as vivid as that of his departure, with several beautiful touches. Jesus portrays the father as waiting for his son, perhaps daily searching the distant road hoping for his appearance. The father's "compassion" assumes some knowledge of the son's pitiable condition, perhaps from reports, and his warm embrace and kissing add to the impact of the story.
