In the Parable of the Vine and the Branches in John 15, Jesus stays with one image—a vine and its branches—to make a point about where growth actually comes from.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” —John 15:5 (NIV)

To fail to "remain" in Christ risks separation from the vineyard and consequent destruction. There is only one evidence that a branch is truly alive: Does it produce clusters of grapes? Fruit-bearing is not a test; rather, fruit-bearing is a byproduct. Fruitfulness will be the inevitable outcome of an interior spiritual life connected with Jesus.
It is not a test. Fruitfulness grows out of connection. So the question isn't "Am I doing enough?" It's "Am I staying close to Christ?" Consider your own journey:
- Where do you notice signs that you are abiding in Christ, and where do you feel spiritually dry or disconnected?
- What kind of fruit might Jesus want to bring forth in your life if you stay close to him?
