Let's read Romans 5:1-5 from the King James Version:
|
5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. |
Now, let's the same verses again from the New International Version:
|
5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. |
The language of the King James Version reflects how people spoke over 400 years ago, and can be difficult to understand. Reading the same passage in another translation can help clarify any questions about meaning. Each translation phrases differently, but they essentially mean that through suffering, we persevere. That perseverance produces hope. Hope is very important to Christians, which you will reflect more deeply on as you read Day 6 of this study. |

Before you open the PDF to continue your studies, we found a very insightful explanation of hope in the Africa Bible Commentary. It clearly states that, "hope brings a joy that nothing can shake. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives makes us aware of the love of God, and this love gives us the unshakeable assurance of things to come (5:5). Therefore, believers must never give up in the face of suffering; God will fulfil his promises. This brings consolation to those of us who are suffering…" |
