| August 28 — On the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan by the U.S. in WWII, the city's Urakami Cathedral will ring its bells for the first time in nearly a century. The cathedral was destroyed in the bombing, but one of its bells survived, and with the help of American Catholics (including the son of one of the bomb's designers) its other bell has now been restored as well, returning the cathedral to its full former glory.
