The "normal" story which almost all modern Christianity tells about the soul comes into sharp focus at funerals. We assume, along with most of Western culture, that the point of Christianity is "to go to heaven when you die." But that is not the story which the Bible itself, both Old and New Testaments, is actually telling.
Rather, the great story the Bible tells, from Genesis to Revelation, is about God's purpose and promise to come and live with us. To make his home with us, as Jesus said on the night he was betrayed (John 14:23). In Revelation's "new Jerusalem," the redeemed will see the face of God (Rev. 22:4), not because they have gone to dwell with God but because he has come to make his home with them (Rev. 21:3). |

| How Many Christians Read the Bible Daily? — A recent study found that less than one-third (31%) of Protestant churchgoers read the Bible daily, while 30% engage with it a few times a week. The survey also found that 14% read Scripture weekly, 11% a few times a month, and 9% rarely or never. Despite these modest daily reading rates, Bible engagement increased from 16% in 2007 to 31% in 2026. One of the biggest myths about mental health that I encounter among Christians is that God doesn't care about mental health issues. Perhaps this myth has continued because the church has been so silent that most people assume it's true.
But God does care.
Of course he does, because he cares about you.
God cares about mental health issues, which may be why they show up so much in the Bible, especially in the book of Psalms. |

Lent is the Christian liturgical season beginning with Ash Wednesday and leading up to Holy Week. It's an observance of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness praying, fasting, and being tempted by Satan, before emerging to begin his public ministry.
Lent is often associated with "high church" (e.g., Catholic and Orthodox) denominations, but it's observed by many Protestants as well, and its Biblical basis provides good reason to do so. It's an important acknowledgment of our origins as dust and our return to dust before resurrection in Christ — reminding us of our complete dependence on him for our whole being. |
| I believe deeply in prayer, but for a long time I didn't feel very "good" at it. I want to pray prayers that reach into heaven and help bring it to earth, right here and now. But way too often as I pray I have felt distracted, inconsistent, ineffective.
