Joseph was a seventeen-year-old young man when his seemingly perfect life turned upside down. Like many of us at that age, he must have had hopes and dreams for his future — who he would marry, where he would live, what he would do for a living. Joseph was obedient and trustworthy and dearly loved by his father. What could possibly go wrong? Yet what unfolded next would change the course of his life forever.
Joseph's life was upended on a seemingly ordinary day. He followed his father's instructions to check on his brothers who were tending the sheep some distance away. His brothers, who had become insanely jealous of Joseph, saw him coming towards them and conspired to grab him and throw him into an empty cistern. Then they sold him to Ishmaelite slave traders headed to Egypt.
From one moment to the next, Joseph's life would never be the same — but what didn't change was Joseph's godly character. |

If the death of Jesus means something, then I think the doorway to a better understanding is one word.
Tetelestai — "It is finished" (John 19:30) — may be the most significant word ever uttered across the stratosphere. The single most important statement in all of human history. Spoken by the innocent and dying only begotten Son of God. Tetelestai is a stake driven into eternity, which stands there still, and the kingdom of darkness is powerless against it. |
| When Scripture describes Jesus as The King of all kings (1 Tim 6:15, Rev 17:14, 19:16), it's painting the portrait of One who's different than all other kings, queens, emperors, presidents, prime ministers, chiefs, multi-starred generals, and rulers in human history.
Jesus is in a league completely by Himself. He's transcendent; there's never been and never will be a sovereign like our Savior. Which is why people had a hard time wrapping their minds around His reign during His earthly ministry. |

Here's a question I've wondered about when I've found myself stuck on a difficult passage I can't seem to figure out — and I bet you've wondered it as well:
If the Bible is God's Word, and it exists because he wants to reveal himself to us, then why are some parts so hard to understand? Why do there have to be hard parts? Doesn't God know people will argue about those sections and get distracted from the heart of the message? Why not just make the whole thing easy?
We're in good company when we ask those questions. At the end of his second epistle, the great Apostle Peter shows he's wondered about those things as well when he admits that the parts of the Bible written by the Apostle Paul are complex and challenging. |
