I hope you had a restful weekend.
Coming back to my Bible after a slower holiday weekend, I found myself in Acts 2—the account of Pentecost. I read it alongside the NKJV Enduring Word Study Bible, one of the newest resources available through Bible Gateway Plus.
And something caught me.
First, the passage:
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. —Acts 2:1–4 (NKJV)
Wind. Fire. Other tongues. It's a strange scene to imagine—and honestly, it sounds like something that happens in fictional stories.
But the NKJV Enduring Word Study Bible addressed that directly:
The rushing mighty wind and the tongues, as of fire, were an unusual, temporary experience that came with the true gift of being filled with the Holy Spirit. It would be wrong to expect a rushing mighty wind or tongues, as of fire, to be present today when the Holy Spirit is poured out, but we can experience the true gift. We, just as they, can all be filled with the Holy Spirit.
“We, just as they.”
That phrase is what caught my attention. It's a simple note—but it changed how I read the whole passage. The spectacular signs were temporary. The filling of the Holy Spirit is not.
