We come into the world in the most vulnerable of states — and nothing really changes. We are all the ages we’ve ever been. Beneath overalls and aprons, pinstripes and scrubs, we’re still naked little babies, with a hue of blue beneath the blood and slime we were bathed in.
For too long, I believed the lie that you somehow outgrow need, or that you should. But the illusion of self-sufficiency only distances us from the beauty of care — and the grace of being held.
I watched competent, qualified people and assumed they didn’t face the same gnawing sense of incompetence and helplessness that I so often do. But all you need to do is start something for the first time, and that same rushing feeling of dependency floods back in.

Ashes from Jerusalem's destruction have lain hidden for 2,600 years beneath one of the world’s most controversial parking lots. Who doesn’t love a “my dad will show you” story? You know the type. A kid is cornered by creeps who are twice his size. Then from behind them comes a deep voice: “Leave my son alone.”
The bullies turn, and to their horror there stands an enormous dad: nine feet tall in his stocking feet, biceps as thick as tree trunks. “You mess with my boy, you mess with me,” the father bellows.
The bums don’t stay around for details. They scatter like scared mice.
We love those stories. Thankfully, our Heavenly Father does too.
