You've probably read Jeremiah 29:11 before. The familiar verse reads:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)
It's one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. It's also one of the most misread.
Jeremiah 29 isn't just one verse. It's a letter to a nation in exile—written by a prophet telling God's people they would be in Babylon for seventy years before God brought them home.
NKJV Evangelical Study Bible, available with Bible Gateway Plus, puts it this way:
This verse is often viewed in popular culture as a blanket promise of blessing and prosperity for God’s people, but the message applies specifically to the exiles in Babylon. God would bless the exiles by bringing them back to the homeland but only after seventy years of divine discipline and judgment. The broader principle is that God’s promises are true even in the most difficult times (see Lam. 3:22–23).
