What is love? This single word covers everything from our feelings for family or a spouse to favorite foods — and God. Yet, not all love is the same. The ancient Greeks recognized this, identifying eight distinct types of love, each uniquely expressed. Their framework offers a richer, deeper understanding of our connections with others — and especially with God.
When someone says, "I love you," what do they really mean? Is it passion, friendship, family, or something deeper? Exploring the eight types of love — agape, eros, ludus, mania, philautia, philia, pragma, and storge — helps us understand and express love with greater intention. This redefinition builds healthier relationships and reveals more of how God shares His perfect love with us. |

You open Scripture to be filled with God's wisdom and peace. But when you close the Bible and read the news, fear and anxiety rush in to take their place. That good work God does through his Word is too precious to surrender to the news cycle. That's why The Pour Over exists—to summarize the news of the day and pair it with biblical reminders that reinforce what you're reading in Scripture, not compete with it. January 28 — Dame Sarah Mullally has been confirmed as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury in a ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral. She pledged to promote justice, equity, and peace, and to address the abuse scandals plaguing the church. Mullally begins her role during a time of division within the Anglican Communion, with traditionalist groups refusing to recognize her authority due to her views on human sexuality and female episcopacy. | January 28 — Augustus Tolton, born enslaved in 1854 Missouri, became the first publicly recognized Black Catholic priest in the U.S. — and is now on the path to sainthood. Despite facing racial discrimination and rejection from U.S. seminaries, he was ordained in Rome in 1886. Known as "Good Father Gus," Tolton served in Quincy, Illinois, and later Chicago, where he established St. Monica's Church for Black Catholics, paving the way for future Black priests. (RNS) |
| January 28 — The Grotto of the Nativity, located within Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity and traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Jesus Christ, is set to undergo restoration. This effort is led by the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox Patriarchates, in collaboration with the State of Palestine. An Italian company, which previously renovated the Basilica of the Nativity, will handle the project to ensure continuity in craftsmanship and respect for the site's sacred significance. | Chain-references and cross-references are two popular methods of linking the Scriptures together. Both types of references are helpful and great for Bible study. Both types allow Scripture to interpret Scripture. However, there are differences in the way they work.
