You've probably heard of Leviathan, the "Bible monster" of Job 41.
Rows of scales. Smoke pouring from its nostrils. A creature no one can "draw out … with a hook." Maybe you pictured a crocodile. Maybe a dragon.
Vivid. Strange. And only half the story.
Open a study Bible alongside Job 41:1 and the picture gets a little clearer. The ESV Global Study Bible, one of 70+ resources available with Bible Gateway Plus, says:
Leviathan may be a crocodile, though some see it as a mythical creature representing forces overcome by God in creation (compare 3:8). Whatever powerful creature is in view, it is a part of God's creation and is governed by his power.
Two ways of reading one passage. One sees real animals God made and delights in. One sees chaos itself on a leash. Both are grounded in the text and land in the same place: "Everything under heaven is Mine" (Job 41:11).
