Every year, I find myself empathizing with Jesus during his final days. The vivid depictions of the crucifixion in media, combined with my knowledge of Roman-era treatment of prisoners, remind me of the physical and emotional pain he experienced. This fosters a deep empathy within me that leads me to ask burning questions, like:
How could Judas betray Jesus? (Luke 22:47-48)
How could people ask to crucify Jesus? (Mark 15:13-14)
How did Mary endure? (John 19:26)
Jesus' journey to the cross has all the hallmarks of a best-selling novel. Betrayal, brutality, and the most important of all, love.
But, this isn't fiction.
Easter and the weeks preceding it is a time I approach with utmost respect.
It's time to re-read the passages in the Bible that describe Jesus' last days.
It's time to study and know more about what life was like in Jesus' time.
More importantly, it's time to reflect on how His sacrifice led to our salvation.
Each of the links above opens the passage on Bible Gateway, and for Bible Gateway Plus members, brings additional insights from trusted resources that come with your subscription. You'll learn more about what kisses meant at the time of Jesus, that Pilate was also confused by the crowd's demands, and what Jesus did for Mary in his final moments.
I pray that you, too, will journey to the cross at Easter, remembering His pain, sacrifice, and love.
Blessings,
Jody
