Over the years, I've stood at a lot of deathbeds, conducted a lot of funerals, said goodbye to a lot of my friends and family, and counseled more people in grief than I can remember. Two types of questions come up again and again among those standing by the graveside of a loved one: - Where is my daddy right now? Where is my loved one? Is my little girl alive right now somewhere?
- How is it going with them? What are they doing right now on the other side of the grave? How are they?
The Bible has the answer, and it is illustrated clearly in a story told by Jesus about two individuals who went to two different places when they died.

October 2 — Prison Fellowship International and Bible League International have partnered to distribute 620,000 Bibles to prisoners in 20 countries over five years. Building on a 2019 collaboration, which provided over 570,000 Bibles, this initiative supports inmates completing the "Prisoner's Journey" program, offered in 700+ prisons globally. The Bibles, available in eight languages, include 52 study lessons tailored to prison life, emphasizing the transformative power of Scripture to foster rehabilitation. (Christian Daily) |
| October 3 — Dame Sarah Mullally has been named the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, a historic milestone for the Church of England. She will lead the Anglican Communion's 85 million members worldwide. Mullally said her first calling is to follow Christ, but acknowledged challenges including declining church attendance, mishandled abuse scandals, and divisions over gender issues — including her own appointment, which although celebrated by many, has drawn criticism from conservative Anglican groups. | October 4 — A new study by the Bible Access Initiative found that 100 million Christians worldwide lack access to a Bible due to legal restrictions, persecution, and severe shortages. Countries like Somalia, North Korea, and Nigeria face the highest barriers, while millions in nations such as India and China await copies of Scripture. The report suggests a combination of digital, audio, and print Bibles to address this "modern famine of the Word." (Christian Daily) |

What does the Bible say about heaven? A lot. Heaven in the Bible can refer to an afterlife or future paradise, but it can also mean something more like a community, way of life, or spiritual state here and now. And sometimes it simply means the sky.
Either way, you will find that heaven (or "the heavens," since both the Hebrew and Greek word are plural), is a real place where God lives. Jesus promises his followers that they will go there and be with him forever. But he also encourages us not to wait for death, but to bring the kingdom of heaven to earth right now.
Here is a selection of Bible verses about heaven in its various meanings. |

Most Christians I know wonder what faithfulness looks like in an environment like ours. Is the answer to embrace an all-out, partisan-driven culture war, with one side representing light and the other darkness? Or is it withdrawal, isolation and focus on our families and churches?
These aren't idle questions: I've heard loud proponents of both of these positions.
Many of us suspect there's a better way — though we struggle to articulate what it is. I believe the book of Daniel helps with the answer. |
| For decades Abraham and Sarah had longed for a child, to no avail. And then, suddenly, when Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90, she became pregnant with Isaac! God had made a covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12 that through him all people on earth would be blessed, and it would be through his son Isaac that the promise of humanity's redemption would be fulfilled.
Then suddenly in Genesis 22 God tells Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son. And Abraham agrees! |
