The beginning of a new year often comes with good intentions.
We make promises to ourselves—to read more Scripture, to be more consistent, to grow in faith. And yet, just a few days in, many of us already feel the tension between what we hoped for and what feels realistic.
Today's reading from 2 Samuel 5–7 speaks directly into that space.
In these chapters, God makes a covenant with David—a promise that will shape the future of Israel and, ultimately, the story of redemption itself. In The Bible, Simplified, a covenant is described this way:
"A covenant is simply an agreement made between two people (or tribes or nations) to work together for a specific purpose."
What's remarkable about God's covenant with David is that it isn't dependent on David's ability to uphold his end perfectly. As the book explains, "Some covenants are unconditional, meaning the promise will stick no matter what the other party does."
Insights like this are available throughout Scripture with Bible Gateway Plus, where resources like The Bible, Simplified are integrated alongside the passages you're reading—helping you understand not just what the text says, but how it fits into the larger story of God's promises.
That matters—especially at the start of a new year.
While our resolve may waver, God's promises do not. His faithfulness doesn't rest on our consistency, but on his character. Understanding this helps reframe how we approach Scripture—not as a test we must pass, but as a story we're invited into.
To help you reflect on this theme and continue building momentum, we've included a free 5-day reading plan PDF, drawn from The Bible, Simplified. It's designed to help you follow the Bible's story with clarity, one day at a time.
