Many Christians find it hard to integrate Jesus's teachings with his death.
As if to say, Jesus's life was about "how to be a good Christian," whilst his death was the event behind the atonement theologies of Paul, Hebrews, and Peter.
But Jesus's message of the kingdom and his death upon the cross are not two different strands of biblical teaching, not two disparate themes rarely woven together, nor ideas that should remain siloed away from each other in our reading of the Gospels. |

January 16 — Archaeologists in Egypt have uncovered a well-preserved Byzantine monastery in the Sohag region, dating back to the 4th–7th centuries AD. The site includes a basilica, monks' cells, refectories, courtyards, and storage facilities, offering a rare glimpse into early Christian monastic life. Artifacts such as amphorae, pottery, and Coptic inscriptions highlight the community's literacy and self-sufficiency, and add to the region's already rich monastic heritage. | January 16 — Trust in pastors among Americans has hit a historic low, with only 27% rating clergy's honesty and ethics as high or very high, according to a Gallup survey. That's a steep decline from 56% in the early 2000s and 67% in 1985, attributed in part to church abuse scandals and coverups. Trust varies by demographics, with older adults, Republicans, and higher-income earners showing higher levels of trust. At the same time, trust in organized religion has rebounded to 36%, up from 31% in 2022. (Lifeway Research) |
| January 16 — Robert Wolgemuth, a Christian publishing leader and author, died on January 10, aged 77, from pneumonia complications. Known for his humility and mentorship, he worked with authors like Max Lucado and Joni Eareckson Tada and held leadership roles at Word Publishing and Thomas Nelson. He authored 25 books, often centered on faith and family. His final book, Finish Line, encouraged living with eternity in view. A memorial service is set for January 23 in South Bend, Indiana. by Martin Luther King, Jr. |
The following is an excerpt from a sermon that was delivered in September 1956 at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. There can be no gainsaying of the fact that modern life is characterized by endless tensions. On all levels of life, men are experiencing disruption and conflict, self‐destruction and meaninglessness.
Fear and anxiety have risen to the throne of modern life, and very few persons escape the influence of their powerful domination. It is probably true to say that we live today in one of the most, if not the most, frustrated generations of all human history.

C.S. Lewis said, "Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means at the point of highest reality."
When the story of Exodus begins, the situation is pretty bleak. A new king sits on the throne of Egypt. This Pharaoh felt threatened by the growing numbers of the Israelites, so he made their work conditions unbearable and commanded the Hebrew midwives to kill all the Israelite baby boys who were born. They were essentially enslaved and facing genocide.
In the face of such evil, we find women from different generations, socio-economic classes, and ethnicities who demonstrate different forms of courageous love. |
| Ephesians 2:1–7 actually form a single sentence in the Greek, with the opening phrase hanging in the air (you were dead in sins) until the main verb in verse 5 (God made us alive).
Now, of course, Paul can tell the story of sin and salvation in many different ways. We shouldn't press individual passages for a total theory. Here, he chooses to foreground, not the intricate meaning of Jesus' saving death, but the life-giving power of Jesus' resurrection. As throughout Ephesians, he is emphasizing who and what the church now is: in this case, a community of people brought from death to new life through the grace of God in the gospel. |
