While whispers of revival have sparked headlines, it’s more complicated than that. It’s true that decades of data show the church is smaller than in past generations, but there are new indicators of hope.
There are also conflicting reports, based on real data, that make it difficult to answer the pressing question of what is happening with the American church.

Ancient Jars Discovered at Shiloh Just Before Wine Festival — June 13: Archaeologists at ancient Shiloh uncovered three large storage jars from the Middle Bronze Age. The discovery could offer fresh insight into daily life and agricultural storage at one of the Bible’s most significant sites: the place where the Tabernacle stood (Joshua 18:1). The jars will be analyzed to determine which goods they might have held, such as wine, grapes, or olive oil. (Jerusalem Post)

Faith-Based Media Bringing the Gospel to Hollywood and Around the Globe — June 14: According to 5&2 Studios, growing demand for faith-based entertainment is drawing Hollywood’s attention. “The Chosen” recently became the most translated TV series in history, a remarkable feat due to the nuance of translating not just the words but the biblical meaning into different cultural contexts. Upcoming projects from 5&2 include “Joseph” in 2027, a “Moses” series and an “Acts” series, and “Chosen in the Wild” with Bear Grylls. (Christian Daily)

Meeting in Orlando, Florida, last week, Southern Baptists voted overwhelmingly for the “Truth and Unity” amendment to their constitution, requiring all its 46,000 affiliated churches to ban women from the office of pastor or ministering in a pastoral role — “specifically preaching to the assembled congregation.”
“This is a great opportunity to speak in truth, in unity and conviction consistent with our confession,” Albert Mohler, Ph.D., and head of Louisville’s Southern Seminary, one of the nation’s largest, said from the convention floor on Wednesday, June 10, at the Orange County Convention Center. About 20,000 messengers (delegates) attended.

The Apostle Paul, writing to Titus, includes a jarring line: "At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures" (Titus 3:3, NIV).
The word that deserves attention here is enslaved. Most of us read that and picture someone who is obviously self-destructive and whose life has visibly come apart.
But Paul is also describing decent, capable, disciplined people who are making reasonable choices, trying to build worthwhile lives, and yet have handed their hearts over to gifts instead of the Giver, and to created things instead of the Creator. That's what makes what the Bible calls idolatry so difficult to see.
