What Were Synagogues Like in Jesus’ Day? — June 15: Archaeologists say the first-century synagogue at Tel Rekhesh in Galilee offers a glimpse of rural Jewish worship during Jesus’ era. Tel Rekhesh, about 10 miles from Magdala, measured roughly 28 by 31 feet, with stone benches, a beaten earth floor, and space for about 50 people. Pottery, lamps, a chalk vessel fragment, and coins date its use to the first and early second centuries AD. The settlement was likely abandoned after the Bar-Kokhba Revolt. Olson began May 30 and reached the 96-hour mark on June 4, taking only the brief breaks allowed under Guinness rules — five minutes for every 60 minutes of speech. While whispers of revival have sparked headlines, it’s more complicated than that. It’s true that decades of data show the church is smaller than in past generations, but there are new indicators of hope.
There are also conflicting reports, based on real data, that make it difficult to answer the pressing question of what is happening with the American church.

Meeting in Orlando, Florida, last week, Southern Baptists voted overwhelmingly for the “Truth and Unity” amendment to their constitution, requiring all its 46,000 affiliated churches to ban women from the office of pastor or ministering in a pastoral role — “specifically preaching to the assembled congregation.”
“This is a great opportunity to speak in truth, in unity and conviction consistent with our confession,” Albert Mohler, Ph.D., and head of Louisville’s Southern Seminary, one of the nation’s largest, said from the convention floor on Wednesday, June 10, at the Orange County Convention Center. About 20,000 messengers (delegates) attended.
