If you’ve ever picked up a Bible from another Christian tradition, you might have been surprised to find it contains a slightly different book list than you’re used to. It’s true: while most of their books are the same, Catholic and Orthodox Bibles have just a few more than most Protestant Bibles.
That’s because they each have a different canon. A canon is the collection of books a religious community recognizes as Scripture.

Scientists Stomp Grapes to Recreate Ancient Israelite Winemaking — September 11: Researchers crushed four tons of Merlot grapes in a reconstructed Hasmonean winepress near Shiloh, testing how ancient winemakers fermented juice. Floor fermentation proved easier but spoiled through oxygen exposure, while vat-fermented wine survived. Though inconclusive, the experiment suggests biblical-era vintners possessed considerable skill. Continuing research may revive indigenous grape varieties used in biblical-era wines. Palm-Sized Silver Scrolls Preserve Oldest Known Biblical Text — September 12: Two tiny silver scrolls discovered in 1979 at Ketef Hinnom near Jerusalem contain versions of Numbers 6:24–26, the Priestly Blessing still used in Jewish and Christian worship. Dating to around 600 BC, they predate the Dead Sea Scrolls by about 400 years. One no larger than a thumbnail, the amulets also preserve early examples of God’s name, YHWH, and show the blessing’s remarkable continuity. (Aleteia)

A ring by any other name is still a ring, except when Pontius Pilate is involved.
The ring in question has been excavated twice: once from its ancient home, Herodium, in the late 1960s, and again about 50 years later, when Israeli scholars pulled it from storage, where it had been forgotten, and brought it into public view in a 2018 article.
Based on the evidence, the Israeli scholars theorized that the ring was somehow associated with Pontius Pilate's administration, if not Pilate himself. But not everyone agreed with their conclusions.

For years I thought I could save myself. Nominal Christianity had trained me to trust in myself, to lean on my own goodness, my own discipline, my own hard work.
