The General Social Survey has asked Americans about their happiness since 1972. For decades, most Americans reported being happy. Not anymore. Happiness has plummeted across every demographic and age group, during the very period in which American society became the most affluent and prosperous in history.
We have more of the things we thought would make us happy, yet we report being more miserable than ever. Why?

We’d expect our prophet to take a stand against their implacability. But, no, Elijah was so scared he made a run for it, a hundred miles across the hills of Samaria. He collapsed, with blistered feet and weary limbs, beneath a juniper tree. In what he thought would be his final request, the once triumphant but now truant prophet prayed, “‘Enough of this, God! Take my life — I’m ready to join my ancestors in the grave!’” (1 Kings 19:4–5 MSG).
We should stop and thank God for telling us this story.

We love to hear that God forgives us, but the rest gets uncomfortable. Grudges have a long, long shelf life and a natural ability to justify all kinds of reasons to stay fresh.
The latest State of the Bible report from the American Bible Society (ABS) zeroes in on forgiveness. From it, two complementary facts emerge: First, forgiveness is a personal struggle for all of us. And second, an inability to forgive can harm us.
