Imagine 5,000 people or more showing up at your home, when you were planning to whip up dinner for just a couple of friends with five loaves of bread and two fish you had on hand. How would you respond? Probably much like the disciples, who "seemed flummoxed," as Rabbi Sobel says. One of Rabbi Sobel's suggested readings that draws a parallel between this miraculous event and the way God tested Israel as they wandered in the desert. "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." Deuteronomy 8:3, NIV Throughout the Bible, we encounter numerous instances where God's provision exceeds our wildest expectations. |
