Advent, in and of itself, means to wait for something to arrive, like "the advent of Spring." Unlike the anticipation we felt as children, waiting to unwrap presents, and feeling like it was nearly impossible to wait. As adults, however, the period of Advent before Christmas should be a serious reflection of Jesus' birth, and what occurred in order for Him to be born. If you study the Bible you'll find both the Old Testament and New Testament anticipated his coming. The book of Isaiah from the Old Testament foretold of his birth, and it was written between 700 and 640 BC! |
Let's read Isaiah 9:6 from the New International Version: |
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. |
Do you remember singing these verses each year as we near December 25th? Let these words fill you with a sense of awe at how long the world waited for the Birth of Jesus. God made his plans for Jesus, and each of us long before we were born to this earth.
